Fully Virtual Options for Students of Suffolk Public Schools
Effective beginning the 2024-2025 Academic Year
This is for SPS Online Program participants only and not applicable to students taking classes through Virtual Virginia or any online platform in SPS school buildings.
Beginning with the 2024 - 2025 school year, Suffolk Public Schools will discontinue paying for the full-time instruction of SPS students in Virtual Virginia, or any other virtual platform. Suffolk Public Schools created the SPS Online Program during the 2021-2022 school year in response to legislation (SB1303) requiring the provision of both face-to-face and virtual instructional options during the pandemic. Since its inception, the SPS Online Program has been supported by funds provided through the CARES Act. With the expiration of both the legislation (ended August 2022) and the CARES Act funding (ending September 2024), on January 11, 2024, Suffolk Public Schools Board approved the proposal to eliminate the SPS Online Program, with the inclusion of certain provisions. While the SPS Online Program will no longer exist or be funded in its current (2023-2024) state, parents will have the opportunity to pay the full tuition costs for students to continue in Virtual Virginia and have that managed through SPS Auxiliary Programs, and still be associated with SPS. Families seeking financial assistance in paying for the SPS Online Program or who wish to apply for special exceptions may do so as part of the application process.
