Student Career Planning Guide

Dear Students and Parents:

The purpose of this guide is to assist students and parents with the 2024-2025 scheduling process for this year.  All secondary students will be entering course requests for the upcoming school year through HAC.  This guide provides information about Suffolk Public Schools (SPS) programs and courses, and to how to complete the scheduling process.  SPS strives to ensure all students have the opportunities to participate in a high quality educational program.  Our vision is that all students will become lifelong learners equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed as productive citizens in a local, national and global society.  It is our hope that this planning guide will assist our students and families as they consider the many courses and programs available in our middle and high schools.

The Profile of a Virginia Graduate developed by the Virginia Board of Education describes foundational skills students should attain during their K-12 education to make them "life-ready."  These skills include critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship.  The Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia (SOA) includes provisions for each middle and high school student to have a personal learning plan and course of study that aligns with the student’s academic and career goals.  It is important that students and parents work with counselors, teachers, and administrators in the development of an Academic and Career Plan that will ensure an effective educational experience aligned with personal goals and interests to prepare students to find success in our complex society.

Together, as a team, we will strive to provide excellent programs and courses for all students that will allow them to not only develop and master essential life skills as outlined in the Profile of a Virginia Graduate, but to also acquire the academic knowledge they need to become productive citizens.  The Suffolk Public Schools team is here to assist and support you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Angela A. King, Coordinator of School Counseling
