Virginia Department of Education Invites Parent Participation in 2025 SOL Standard-Setting for Math and Reading Assessments -- DEADLINE TO APPLY IS MAY 2

In June 2025, Virginia will conduct Mastery Level/Standard Setting to establish new cut scores for the Math and Reading Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. These new cut scores will be used to measure student performance on the assessments starting in the 2025-2026 school year. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is seeking parents and guardians to bring their unique perspectives on their children as students and provide guidance and recommendations for these new, more rigorous cut scores to ensure they reflect appropriate achievement levels. 

  • Purpose: The primary goal is to set new performance level cut scores for the Math and Reading SOL assessments. 

  • Timing: The standard-setting process will take place in June 2025, with the Mathematics meetings on June 9-11 and the Reading meetings on June 11-13. All standard-setting meetings will be held at the Virginia Crossings Hotel and Conference Center, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway, Glen Allen, VA 20359. Hotel and per diem will be covered by the Virginia Department of Education. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

  • Impact: The newly established cut scores will be used to categorize student performance on the SOL assessments, starting with the 2025-2026 school year. 

Parents and guardians interested in participating can apply through a Community Member Standards Setting Application. The deadline to apply is May 2, 2025

virtual orientation meeting will be held on May 19, 2025, to familiarize the selected members with the standard-setting process. Parents and guardians who are selected to be part of the committee will receive additional information and a link to the virtual meeting via email.
