What Should My Child Do With Their Chromebook After the Last Day of School?

End-of-Year Chromebook Guidance for Students and Families:

  • Kindergarten through 4th Grade: Students must return their Chromebooks to their school by the last day. Devices should be clean, free of stickers, and undamaged. Devices will be collected by classroom teachers and students/parents should adhere to the date established by the school.

  • Grades 5–11 and Returning 12th Graders: Students will retain their Chromebooks over the summer and should continue to care for them responsibly.

  • Graduating Seniors: All seniors who are graduating in May must return their Chromebook and original HP charger prior to graduation.

  • Summer Graduates: Students who are graduating during the summer must return their Chromebook and charger prior to their summer graduation ceremony.

  • Students Leaving the Division: Any student who is transferring out of Suffolk Public Schools must return their Chromebook and charger to their current school. Failure to do so will result in a financial charge.

Chromebook Damage & Associated Fees:

SPS emphasizes the importance of caring for devices, as damage to student Chromebooks creates significant financial strain on the division due to repair and replacement costs.

  • Normal Wear and Tear includes light scratches or marks, and minor wear to external parts such as the case, keyboard, or hinges.

  • Neglect or Abuse includes, but is not limited to:

    • Cracked screens or cases

    • Missing or broken keys

    • Damaged ports or chargers

    • Paint, stickers, or markings not provided by SPS

    • Water, thermal, or physical damage due to drops or spills

Alterations or modifications of any kind are not considered normal wear and tear, and warranty coverage does not apply to such cases.

Repair and Replacement Costs:

  • Damaged Device: $25.00 per incident

  • Lost Device: $100.00

  • Device Damaged Beyond Repair: $100.00

  • Damage Due to Fire or Natural Disaster: Students must return the damaged device to have the lost/stolen fee waived

Suffolk Public Schools encourages all families to inspect and care for their student devices and ensure timely returns where applicable to avoid unnecessary charges. For additional questions, please contact your child’s school.
