Note: Students may need to undergo a criminal background check that includes fingerprinting and drug screening.  It is important to note that final eligibility for national registry certification testing is determined by the course education coordinator and the EMS Physician. This course has specific state laws and regulations from a governing medical board agency.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is a one (1) year dual credit program that prepares students for the certification exam administered by the Virginia Department of Health and employment as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and/or for entry into post-secondary Paramedic or Public Safety programs.

Students become skilled in identifying and dealing with emergencies such as bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, and cardiac arrest. Instruction emphasizes proper care and use of common emergency and safe methods for lifting, moving, and transporting injured persons. Supervised on-the-job training, patient care experience, and a clinical rotation in a local hospital are components of the instructional program. Additionally, students will receive nine (9) dual credit hours towards college if seeking an EMT Career Studies Certificate.

Students will have the opportunity to take the Emergency Medical Exam, qualifying them for an industry credential, as well as the National Occupational Testing Institute (NOCTI - Emergency Medical Services) certification, pending a successful outcome on the exam.
