The Role Model Program is run by the Department of Special Education (SPED) with the aim of allowing children with disabilities to learn from their peers who do not have disabilities. Our objective is to create a suitable learning setting that combines early childhood special education and developmental preschool programs, in order to equip all children with the skills necessary to achieve educational success.
Children selected as role models will participate in a modified version of the Preschool curriculum offered in our Early Start program. This modified curriculum is designed to promote cognitive and social growth and encourage development and independence.

Our Early Childhood Special Education classrooms with reversed inclusion are available at five (5) of our elementary schools: Florence Bowser, Kilby Shores, Booker T. Washington, Northern Shores, and Oakland. These classrooms are specifically designed to provide positive role models for all students.

Acceptance into this program is based on an application and interview process. The location of the program for approved applicants will be determined by the school they are zoned for.

Before being considered for an interview, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:
    - Must be a resident of the City of Suffolk
    - Must be at least 3 years old by the first day of school for the upcoming year
    - Must be fully toilet trained
    - Must be able to interact well with peers of the same age and demonstrate appropriate skills for their age
    - Must not have an active Individualized Education Program (IEP) or be suspected to require specialized instruction.

Applications are accepted through March 23, 2024. Please see the link to register: Registration link
