Summer Newman, Administrative AssistantSuffolk Public Schools created the SPS Online Program during the 2021-2022 school year in response to legislation (SB1303) requiring the provision of both face-to-face and virtual instructional options during the pandemic. Since its inception, the SPS Online Program has been supported by funds provided through the CARES Act. With the expiration of both the legislation (ended August 2022) and CARES Act funding (ending September 2024), on January 11, 2024, Suffolk Public Schools School Board approved the proposal to eliminate the SPS Online Program, with the inclusion of certain provisions.
While the full-time virtual learning SPS Online Program will not be funded by Suffolk Public Schools, parents will have the opportunity to pay the full tuition costs for students to have instruction through Virtual Virginia and receive academic counseling, communication, resources, and additional support managed through SPS Auxiliary Programs. Students will be associated with SPS and their home zoned school to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, required testing, and organizations. Families seeking financial assistance in paying for the SPS Online Program or who wish to apply for special exceptions may do so as part of the application process.
